This mask is the only product from Tata Harper’s much talked about 100% natural, Vermont based range that I own in full size. I have tried samples sizes of Tata’s cleansers, serums, and moisturizers, but find it difficult to use them for more than a couple of days, because they’re too rich for my skin type. This mask though, is something else. After reading Spirit Demerson’s glowing review of this product, and seeing an Instagram pic on her top shelf of masks, I had to get one even before trying it (Note to myself: Sample products before you buy, especially the expensive ones). For a while, it just sat in my beauty closet, untouched, ignored between many other formidable competitors, in the form of Yuli’s Pure Mask and May Lindstrom’s The Problem Solver. When I finally got around to using it, I wasn’t impressed.
The mask has a light peach/pink tone, and spreads easily on dry skin. You need very little product to cover your entire face and part of your neck. I like to spread it on slightly damp skin just to seal in some added moisture and to stretch the bottle a little longer. When I leave it on for 20-30 minutes per the instructions, I don’t really see any eye-catching results. My skin does appear a little calmer and more even toned. In any case, wearing a wet mask that costs $55 for a 1 oz bottle for half an hour or less seems like a little bit of waste.
I read through the reviews of this mask on SBL’s site and came across one particular review advising that this mask is brilliant as a spot treatment. Who doesn’t need a spot treatment (bless you if you don’t!)? Well I do! Now my favorite method of applying this mask and getting the most bang for buck is to leave it on overnight as a spot treatment on active spots. On application, parts of my face feel a little stretched, but nothing too uncomfortable. I like to apply it 10-15 mins before hitting the bed, to allow it to dry a bit. By morning, the blemishes are either gone or drastically reduced. The inflamed, red acne spots take approx. 2-3 days to fully subside, but the whiteheads are mostly gone by next morning. The best part of using this as a spot treatment is that it doesn’t stain my pillow cover and the transparent texture means it’s really difficult to see I have a mask on my face (think of green spots all over the face, courtesy of Queen Helene’s Mint Julip Masque – works wonderfully, but has parabens). I’ve even left it on my face as a spot treatment while walking my dog outside, answering the door, collecting mail etc. I am not sure if I would venture out with a full face of this mask since it does make you look a little shiny, but as a spot treatment, doesn’t really look that apparent.
Now that I think about it, it’s not very surprising why it does such a good job as an acne treatment – it has Pomegranate enzymes, White Willow bark and French Pink Clay. It’s a really gentle mask, but packs such a punch and is a testament that you don’t need to always slather on piles of clay masks to improve your skin. Sometimes, simplicity is the best.
This is a permanent staple in my travel bag, of course, since I need all the help I can get to keep those travel/jet lag/stress related spots at bay. As soon as I see a new red spot or whitehead coming up, I treat it with a thin layer of this mask. You can see in the picture above I’m almost out of it. Luckily, Tata Harper has the Annual Friends and Family 15% off event (Use code: FF2014) going on right now and I’ve taken advantage of it and ordered another full size.
All you MUA enthusiasts know that “HG” (aka Holy Grail) is not a term to be used lightly, but I think this mask has truly earned the HG status for me.
