Toner Love – Part II

  1. Love love your blog!
I never read each single line of any other blog EXCEPT yours!
    Well written! 🙂
Toners for me are the integral part of a “skincare routine”. I agree with what you say. Exfoliating toners like Pixi glow tonic have helped me immensely in an otherwise natural skincare routine. If there was an option to try a similar powerful exfoliating toner in a natural product i would do it in a heartbeat. I do not have access to P50 so just will have to do with Pixi which is a brilliant toner!
My go to hydrating / pre serum / pre facial mist is the good old Cortas rosewater.
I agree with the last three post of your well written blog post. 🙂

    1. Your comment made my day (in fact, the entire week) xx Thanks so much for the sweet comment 🙂

I am yet to try the Pixi Glow tonic, but have heard so much about it (mostly from Caroline Hirons and her followers). Is it gentle enough? Among the natural options, I really like the Willow + Aloe Pore Minimizer from Andalou Naturals (using it currently). Yoshimomo NYC on Etsy also sells an AHA + BHA exfoliating toner, and in fact, it’s on 40% discount currently. I haven’t tried it, but I love that brand! I’m using their AHA + BHA Exfoliating Cleanser currently and loving it. You could take a look at their toner if you’re looking for a more natural option 🙂

I LOVE Cortas water too! I used to get them from my local Indian store. It’s so pure and lovely (and amazingly cheap). xx Are you on Instagram or some place else?

      Thanks so much for reading!

      1. Now that you have mentioned Caroline Hirons i love you and your blog even more !! 😉
Pixi is supposedly gentler than P50. I have gone through 4 bottles so far and stocking up 2 more. 🙂 🙂
I am addicted to that Pixi !!!
I was wondering if i could use Andalou as a spritzer?
I have to look into Yoshimomo Nyc.

      2. Oooh, didn’t realize you’re a CH fan! I like her frank attitude and some of her skincare routines, although not very bought in by her product recommendations 😉 I take whatever knowledge I can though! She knows her stuff.

Yeah, P50 is quite strong. My skin couldn’t take it. You’re definitely in LOVE with Pixi, I can see that 🙂

I think you should be able to use Andalou as a spritzer if you can decant it to another bottle! xx

      3. I love CH. I love the fact that she has helped “skincare ignorant” people understand the nuances of cleansers, toners etc etc. I do not follow her product recommendations because i march to my beat aka instincts 🙂 EXCEPT Pixi 😀
I think my wallet is gonna become lighter , now that i have decided to try Yoshimomo. Thanks for the reco!

  2. Wow wow for a lady who loves her face oils you sure do use a lot of toner! I went through a thermal water phase but they just don’t appeal any more. I don’t completely agree with you on investors part, but I think that might be due to difference in our skin type. Since mine is oily, a good hydrating toner is more beneficial than an oil ( as obvs I need to hydrate my skin but lack of oil is not a problem). After I spray my face one or two drops of face oil seals in that toner before all the good stuff evaporates! I wouldn’t use hydrosols to refresh during the day, it’s a bit pointless. Since I have a layer of oil coating my skin and possibly makeup, ️it won’t penetrate where I need the hydration and will just evaporate taking moisture out and leaving my skin more oily! The only time I would spray any toner during the day it would be something with glycerin in the summer when I’m at home and didn’t use any cream/oil, as my skin often doesn’t need anything more then s toner in the summer (of course I use sunscreen outside). Xx

    1. Hi Tammy,

Hehe, yeah…it’s all “relative”, I guess. My “love” is no normal love 😛 But coming from Toner Tammy, I take this as a compliment. I think it makes sense for you to invest in your toners if that’s what you primarily rely on during summers. Skin is so personal, it’s difficult to apply the same logic across all. Although even then, I feel like toners don’t nearly contain as many actives as serums/oils, and in comparison, I would still spend less on toners, if I were on a fixed budget. The chances of mediocre toners messing up your skin are less compared to the havoc mediocre face oils/serums might cause.

I’m so glad you agree that using hydrosols to “refresh” does no good! 🙂 Which glycerine based spray are you using? I’m always looking for more options! The only one that I’ve found so far that does a good job is Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist.

      Much love,
      Ruhi xx

    1. Hmm, I would say the Aloe + Willow Bark Pore Minimizer that I’d reviewed in Part I is amazing for acneic skin due to the gentle exfoliating enzymes. It makes my skin feel amazingly clean and fresh. And the pores are so much better! You can pick one up from pharmaca.com at an amazing discount, in case you shop there! 🙂 Let me know what you end up buying! Thanks so much for reading and comment as usual xx

My tonner is running out and am trying to switch to a ‘green’ one, but there are so many different opinions out there. Have you tried the Yuli Elixir(s) since you seem to love their line. Would you still recommend Andalou Naturals if I don’t want any AHA since my skin is super sensitive and ‘thin’

    Thanks

    1. Hi Anna, Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you like my reviews 🙂

I’ve tried the Panacea Elixir (went through two bottles), and quite liked it, but I am not particularly finicky about the toners, and constantly switch brands. Andalou Naturals is really gentle – I can’t tell what the % concentration of acids is since the packaging doesn’t mention it. I think it relies more on Fruit derived enzymes and Willow Bark to exfoliate, versus Lactic and Glycolic. If you’re super sensitive, might be best to skip Willow Bark Pore Minimizer, but the Brightening Toner would still be a good option since it’s quite hydrating. REN has another very gentle exfoliating/clarifying toner – heard great reviews on it, but haven’t tried personally.

I love the way that you categorize all of your toners. This was such an informative but easy read! I’m really intrigued by the Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator, though I can’t justify going out of my Heritage Store Rose Petals comfort zone because that spray is so darn inexpensive! I haven’t noticed any dryness effects from spraying the rose water though I do tend to lean on the oilier side. That Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist sounds perfect! I also just mist more when I need extra moisture as I feel it is more comfortable that way, especially at night. Love love love your tips at the end, I’m definitely not the kind of girl who can be extremely minimalistic with her skincare (though I can be for makeup). Having those essential toners is definitely important(for me!) and I’m super keen on trying new ones after reading your posts!

    1. Hi Vanessa,

Thank you for your comment! So another Heritage Store Rose Toner fan… 🙂 This seems like a popular choice amongst many green beauties. Yes, the price can’t be beat, I agree. If you love Rose Toners, Alteya Organics makes another Rose Water Toner that’s made with steam distillation process, and the big 500 ml bottle is quite reasonable (sells on Amazon), plus USDA certified organic. Yes, the Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist is a dream! I always carry it while traveling.

I think we’re the same way – I can never scrimp on skincare 🙂 For makeup, I am very minimal. I used to buy lots of makeup when I was into the conventional brands (NARS, Benefit etc.), but now after making the switch, I have picked up only a couple of items because I want to take it really slow and first work on my skin.

      Much love, Ruhi xx

  5. Hi, Ruhi! Love your toner posts! I never understood toners when I was using conventional products; they would just burn my skin and dry it out. Now I’m a bit obsessed! Serums and oils go on so much better after a nice spritz or pat pat of flower water. 🙂

I actually just got the Alteya lavender water last week! It’s really lovely and has a honeyed scent, which I love in lavender. I’ve been using their rose water for years as well!

Another toner worth mentioning is the Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner. I was recommended the Clarifying Toner at one point because I am acne-prone, but my skin is also dry and sensitive so it was too astringent. The Facial Toner is perfect, though! I keep coming back to it and have gone through several bottles now. I spray a little in my hand and mix with aloe vera gel, then pat onto my face,- such a nice little treat before moisturizer! It’s really healing and tightening… My skin is always more smooth after I’ve been using it…

    1. Hi “The Goat”! 🙂 Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I was also quite disoriented when it came to conventional toners, and in fact, wouldn’t even use one. It was only after switching to organic, natural green skin care that I understood what they’re all about (and a little help from Caroline Hirons). Oooh, so glad to know you’re loving Alteya Lavender Water. I am going to purchase that once I’m out of my floral waters.

I’ve tested a small deluxe sample of the Dr. Hauschka toner and loved it! Your idea of mixing it with a bit of aloe vera gel is so amazing. I would think it helps stretch the toner usage too, yes? My local Marshalls store had so many on sale recently, but I was so stocked up that I didn’t dare pick up another one 😐 I shall definitely keep your review in mind next time I come across it though! xx Thanks so much for reading.

  7. Andalou’s “Blossom & Leaf” is an excellent, inexpensive toner, and it’s often on sale (and/or discounted with a code) at Pharmaca. I love the smell of geranium, and even though I’m sensitive to it on my mature, often dehydrated skin, this toner contains just the slightest hint of it, so it never irritates me. It also has a hint of petitgrain, and it smells divine! What a luxury. I also love Derma-E’s “Soothing” toner which has pycnogenol in it. That’s fabulous for calming red skin! If I get these on sale, they work out to less than $10 for 6 oz.

Both have great antioxidants, but the Andalou has a smell which never fails to cheer me up.

    Andalou’s “Blossom & Leaf”
Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis juice*, panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), tocopherol (vitamin E), lauric acid, fruit stem cells (malus domestica, solar vitis) and bioactive 8 berry complex*, resveratrol, ubiquinone (CoQ10), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C), aspalathus linearis (rooibos), hibiscus rosa-sinensis and camellia sinensis (white tea) extracts*†, phenethyl alcohol, ethylhexylglycerin, citrus aurantium (petitgrain) and geranium maculatum oils

Derma E Soothing Toner with Pycnogenol
Water (aqua), glycerin, pinus pinaster (Pycnolgenol®) bark extract, panthenol, allantoin, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract* (.1%), organic chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract* (.1%), organic aloe barbadensis leaf extraxct* (.1%), phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin.

    1. Thank you for your comment! I love pharmaca.com too (and their amazing sales). I do have that Blossom and Leaf toner actually, but yet to open it 🙂 I bought a bunch from my local Marshalls store for $7.99 each (even cheaper than pharmaca). So glad to know you like it!

  8. Hey Ruhi!

I keep coming back to this post! Time for me to pick up some new toner and the floral waters sound great. Question – Alteya has a bunch of different bottles on Amazon – do you know if there is any difference between them? The one you linked above is just regular “lavender water” and then there is another listed as “toner mist”. The obvious difference is one is spray and the other is pour but are they essentially the same? I don’t know if labeling one as “toner mist” means anything different? And then the rose water has another option in a dark bottle that looks completely different. So confusing …

    1. Hi Pauline!

There is probably no difference, except for the delivery method (spray versus screw cap). I would say get the screw cap, since it’s much cheaper. You can always decant to an empty spritzer if you prefer misting! xx
