My makeup mantra is different from my approach to skincare – In comparison to my skincare routine that I find very relaxing, my makeup routine stresses me out, because by the time I’m done with my skincare, I am usually running late, with just about sufficient time left to grab a quick bite, and head out of the door for work ASAP (and possibly snuggle with my dog, Sasha, and take conference calls at the same time – my mornings are a mess!). So, I try to keep my makeup routine as quick as possible (5-10 mins max). While my skincare routine is 100% natural at this point, I’m still working through many old makeup products (especially lips and blushes). Since I don’t wear much makeup, it’s difficult throwing these away and spending a bomb switching to 100% natural – although I do want to get to that point by end of year, if possible.
My skin is far from perfect, with quite a few acne marks around my cheeks and chin, but my makeup philosophy is “less is more”. I strive for a natural look, and prefer products that are quick and easy. After I’m done cleansing and moisturizing, here’s the routine that I usually follow on a work day.
All pictures below have been left untouched, to show the real color shade.
1. Apply Sunscreen/BB Cream – I am currently using Andalou Naturals Brightening All – in – One Beauty Balm (Sheer Tint) with SPF 30. This is a very recent addition to my routine, but it’s working quite well for me. I absolutely hate applying sunscreen, and since I spend the majority of my day working in front of a computer, and only about 10 mins driving back and forth from work, I have mostly been able to get away without sunscreen. But I’ve read lots of articles online saying that there’s no point applying brightening products, if you don’t wear sunscreen. So…here I am, because I love my brightening products, and will do anything (as long as it’s natural) to get rid of my hyper pigmentation. This product has SPF30 with 20% Zinc Oxide (one of the highest concentrations I found so far), and as a bonus, the sheer tint of the BB cream evens out my skin tone quite nicely. It doesn’t hide all my marks and spots, and is quite oily – almost can’t touch my face at this point, without the application of a finishing powder. So far, it hasn’t caused me any breakouts, and stays put on my face all day. Will write a more detailed review later, after I’ve properly tested it.
2. Under Eye Concealer – I won a $75 Kjaer Weis Gift Card in their Instagram Giveaway, and used that and a little bit of my own funds to purchase the Foundation (Shade: Velvety) and the Mascara. I don’t like a full face of foundation (looks too artificial/made up to me) for daily wear, and instead, use this as an under eye concealer. The product has just the right amount of slip to quickly conceal my under eye dark circles – I use my fingers/hands for application because it’s much faster than using a brush (sorry for the “unprofessionalism”). Also, the warmth helps blend the product better. It does crease a bit and needs some adjustment every couple of hours, especially under my eyes, where it settles in the fine lines. I’ve also used this once as a full face foundation, and had no issues spreading the product, and it caused no breakouts. The key is to ensure your face is properly exfoliated and moisturized prior to the foundation application. The shade Velvety was the darkest shade KW used to carry when I ordered this, but they’ve just released an even darker shade, Delicate! Luckily for me, Velvety is a perfect match. Will write a more detailed review later, after I’ve properly tested it.
3. Finishing Powder – Currently using the RMS Beauty Tinted “Un” Powder in Shade 3-4. I decided to go for this primarily because of the short list of ingredients – only two (Silica and Iron Oxides). And the beautiful packaging doesn’t hurt, of course. An extremely finely milled powder, that takes away all the oiliness/heaviness of my Sunscreen/BB cream. It doesn’t completely mattify, but takes away that oily shine, and leaves my face with just the right level of dewiness. I use the Eco Tools Buffing Brush (from the limited edition) to apply the powder all over my face, and the Eco Tools Concealer Brush (from the same limited edition) to powder my eye area. The powder is really light and you could easily layer 3-4 layers. I stick to 1-2 layers – this is sufficient to take away any oiliness caused by the BB cream/sunscreen. Some of you asked on Instagram if it can be used as a foundation – The tint in this powder is very light and nearly not sufficient to work as a foundation, but it slightly blurs out the unevenness and diminishes the appearance of pores. I haven’t used loose powder in years, but had to add one to my routine, because of the addition of sunscreen (why am I making my life complicated?). It’s definitely a bit of hassle to dispense an adequate amount of loose powder – I usually give the jar a couple of shakes. I am keeping the puff as a “guard” to prevent the loose powder from getting into everything. More detailed review to follow later.
4. Eye makeup – I started using the Kjaer Weis mascara a week or so ago. The wand is quite easy to maneuver, the formula stays put all day, and gives a decent amount of volume and lengthening effects. I apply a single layer to both my upper and lower lashes. It doesn’t slide or transfer, and stays put all day. I gave up on mascara for a really long time, because I hate losing lashes during the cleansing process – I still lose 1 or 2 lashes even though I use the gentlest possible oil cleanser. Any thoughts on how to avoid this? Regarding the cost of this mascara, I think the huge upfront investment should pay off long term since the refills are so much cheaper (and I can always wait for an offer!). The KW packaging is just so pretty and hard to resist. I am keeping my KW makeup in its original red cardboard packaging, even though eventually, I’m pretty sure they’ll end up getting dirty. At least I can avoid the scratches this way.
I usually like to add a black eyeliner to my upper/lower lids if I can spare a minute, and for this, I am currently using Tarte EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow in black. It is completely matte, and doesn’t smudge. Tarte is not 100% natural, but I am okay with this formulation. Besides, I still have a huge collection of gel and pencil eyeliners from “dirty” brands, that I’m working on finishing up!
5. Blush – Because of the tinted sunscreen and finishing powder, I need to apply some blush, to add some color to my cheeks. I had almost stopped using blushes due to my breakouts, but slowly adding them back to my routine. The one pictured above is Alima Pure Satin Matte Blush in “Antique Rose”. I rotate this with my other “dirty” blushes, and some other samples from Tata Harper (Very Vivacious) and Vapor Organic Beauty (Courtesan). Even a tiny sample lasts me a long time — so I find it hard to justify spending a lot of money on full sized blushes, especially when I still have super expensive blushes from NARS (gave most of them away, but still have some that I couldn’t make myself part with) and the like.
6. Lip – Currently loving RMS Beauty Lip Shine in Bloom. The description says it’s a “super sheer pink shine”. It gives me the famous “my lips but better” look! Since the color is so subtle, I don’t have to worry too much about my lips clashing with my eyes or cheeks. It lasts for about 2 hours I’d say, before needing a re-application. Since the lip shines come in wide mouthed pots, I prefer not carrying them around with me (really don’t want to dip dirty fingers in them). So, for touch ups, I rely on whatever sample or gloss or lip tint that has made its way into my travel makeup purse. I was lucky enough to bag all four RMS Beauty lip shines during their VDay offer earlier this year. I think I’m all stocked up in the lips department (still have so many lipsticks, lip tints, glosses etc. from other brands that need using up).
Anyway, so this is my short and sweet makeup routine. I could skip the under eye concealer and my black eyeliner if I have absolutely no time, but the tinted sunscreen, tinted powder, and a little bit of mascara are essential for looking presentable.
Do you have a simple 5 minute routine? Please do share!
Intrigued by the Kjaer Weis mascara. I’ll check that out.
My routine is (not completely clean):
Tinted Sunscreen: Dermaquest Zinclear
Blush: Nars or Tata Harper (I’m with you, can’t part with the Nars just yet)
Eyeliner: I have so many lol
Mascara: on the hunt for a nonclumpy one that doesn’t sting my eyes
That’s it! Easy peasy! Might add a concealer. Thanks for the post!

Hi Cairiebird,
Thanks so much for reading and your comment! I love your simple routine – thank you for sharing! Definitely do checkout the mascara – It’s much easier to take off too, and doesn’t clump 🙂

As usual the comprehensive review that i like. No “faffing” about!!! And i read each and every line. RUHI you know you are lucky to have a reader like me 😂
Love love love! (Beautiful clicks as always : wont repeat this compliment because it would bore you to death)
👍
It is so nice to hear that you still have the “conventional” makeup.
I was under the impression that i was the only one. I am guilty!
1. Good things miracle matifier by Alice Hart layered over the Celtic herbal serum. The Mychelle spf when the sun is out which is RARELY.
2. Lily Lolo mineral foundation. Love this stuff. The skin looks glowy after a point. And the skin doesn’t feel heavy and layered like that Estee Lauder.
3. Dirty mascara and dirty eyeliner ocassionally :urban decay like it a lot but stopped using it because it feels heavy now.
4. Korres and Nuxe reve de miel
I am parting with korres but not Nuxe. I am sceptical about natural lip balms in general because i have tried many. Did not work. But may try Hurraw spf lip balms.
5. The dirty blush by estee -gorgeous though, going to chuck it the bin and replace it with lily lolo.
I am not a conventional makeup hoarder (so i have no remorse chucking them in the bin) but may turn into one soon.
Phew!!

Hi Swapna,
Indeed, extremely lucky to have connected with you after you took the initiative to read and comment 🙂 It is always a joy to read your detailed and enthusiastic feedback.
Please continue the compliments! Whoever gets bored of them? LOL Just kidding.
I love these tiny British lingos you throw at me – “faffing”. I need to incorporate that into my vocabulary.
I have heard quite a bit about Lily Lolo, although yet to try anything. I am usually very contrastive with my makeup stash, since I go through these so slowly, and then they expire too. Their mascara is supposed to be quite good. Have you tried it?
I do love the Korres Lip Balms too (I would say the results are very much like what you would get from RMS Beauty Lip Shines). Yes, LOVE Reve de Miel – got a huge pot from Paris, for a pittance. I use it rarely though – usually when I need to moisturize before putting on a lipstick. Never tried Hurraw, but heard great things! There are lots of clean green beauty brands to choose from, for lip balms. My current favorite is CV Skinlabs Skin Balm, and Tatcha’s Camellia Lip Balm (not sure if you have access to these in UK…).
Good to know you find it so easy to toss conventional makeup! I think I’ve gotten rid of most of them, except for a couple of blushes from NARS, and UD eyeliners (rarely used, but just hoarding them), and some waterproof mascaras (Lancome, Guerlain, etc). I do have quite a few chubby sticks from Tarte, and working on them. Don’t feel too bad using them, since Tarte is much better than other conventional brands!

Ok so i picked up the korres back from my clean bin LOL! I love it way tooo much! I am still not convinced about the RMS lip shine. The price maybe. Well i had no compunctions buying an Estee Lauder lipstick but something tells me i might find something similar to the RMS lip shine. No doubt RMS is on my list to try yet i am researching on this thing. Will let you know if I get something similar to RMS (as in the same ingredient profile and less price tag). Some of the products that have an EWG rating of 1 or so have not worked for me so Korres is pretty much a keeper!
I have sworn my allegiance to reve de miel!
Lily lolo mascara hmmmm skip maybe. Heard ok things!
I think Kjaer Weis is good in the mascara department . But i may cheat and get a Lancome in future unless you convince me to get a mind boggling mascara that you may have discovered 😚😍
Totally forgot about Tarte mascara. (Noting that in my list). Yup agree about Tarte being better!
I love these sensible “conversations” with you.💗😗😘

Yes, RMS is definitely quite expensive, especially if you have loads of other lip products to finish up, like I do. I managed to get 4 lip shines for $60 during their VDay event! I am really liking the Kjaer Weis mascara – it’s quite expensive, but find it to be less damaging than most mascaras. Lancome is definitely great performance wise (I still have a deluxe sample stashed away somewhere), but try to use it only when I need something waterproof! xx

Great post! I really like the Andalou BB cream too. I wish I had tips for your lashes – I’ve been having the exact same issue, only with my eyebrows! No matter what I do, if I fill them in, I find myself losing a hair or two when I remove my makeup…which only leads to needing to fill them in even more. Such a silly dilemma 🙂

Hi Caitie!
Thanks so much for your comment. Good to know you’re using that BB cream and liking it too! I’ve heard putting castor oil on lashes and eyebrows helps strengthen the hair strands, I’m just too lazy to try it though 🙂 Totally get the dilemma girl…it sucks! And men apparently have more lashes (and longer too) than we do. Nature’s not fair!

Love your picks Ruhi! Bloom looks really pretty – I just picked up Moment along with Solar eyeshadow coz rms beauty had a $17 sale on Solar… 😀 It’s going to be my first lip shine, so excited! Have you ever used the lip shine as a blush?

Thank you so much, Ru! Ooooh yes that offer was so tempting. Your haul sounds amazing! 🙂 I had to smack myself to not buy anything else! 😀 I’ve been eyeing Karma for a long time now. I am yet to try the lip shine as a blush, although I’ve heard it works quite well. Just scared of breaking out! Maybe I can give it a try if I need to wear it for a short while. Please let me know if you get around to testing it first.

Now that husband knows that “we” can pay a pittance to buy Nuxe in France, he will hoard every damn pot that they would stock in the store. He loves HER (nuxe) more than me!😂

Ruhi, I’m loving this new layout!
That blush reminds me of Tarte’s exposed! I completely agree with your fuss-free approach to makeup! My usual morning routine is Beautycounter’s Tintskin in Linen, 100% Pure powder in Creme, Tarte Blush in Exposed, Etude House eyebrow pencil, some eyeshadow from modern minerals, and 100% Pure Mascara in Black Tea. I usually throw on a lip shade like Nobody’s Baby from Ilia and call it a day. That RMS lip shade is amazing!

Thanks, Vanessa! I spend far too much time tweaking the layout (bane of working in IT, I guess…). Haha.
I’d say this blush is much darker than Tarte’s Exposed. Totally love your simple routine! ❤ Think our approaches are very similar 🙂 I think I am getting better at finishing my makeup faster – it helps to stick to the same products/routine, of course!

Ruhi!! Great post!!
I am very super excited to try the Andalou BB Cream. Sounds like the brightening might be a good greasy one for me ;), but I love love the smell of their rose line!! It’ll be a tough choice! Have you considered their oily skin line? I think they might a BB in that line as well.
AND I will have to try the Tarte as an eyeliner! The only thing I really miss is my dirty liquid liner for a sharp, clean cat eye. I actually used my friend’s Bobbi Brown, I think, gel liner. It came in a similar pot, and it made me even more nostalgic! So I’m very excited to try this Tarte one. :))

Oy, sorry for all the typos!! I meant “they might have a BB in that line…” and that I used my friend’s Bobbi Brown gel liner last night. Haha I’m still asleep. Lazy Saturday…

Hi Silvy!
The brightening one is definitely greasy 😉 The greasiness wasn’t really a problem while flying because believe it or not, the in flight cabin air sucked in all that oil from my face. Haha. I have seen the other BB creams from this line at Whole Foods, but yet to try any of them! The one from the Rose range is definitely extremely tempting, and so is the new Rose Tinted Sunscreen from Badger Balm! I have the Coola sunscreen to get through next, but after I’m done with that, I’m definitely going to pick up one of the Rose ones!
The Tarte eyeliner works great for cat eyes :)And it stays put all day! I forgot about this gel eyeliner (and infact ALL my eye liners) all of last year since I was going through a “make up free” phase, if that makes any sense. Jane Iredale has also released some gel eyeliner pots 🙂 Yet to try any, but seen lots of pics – might be worth looking into if you’re planning on purchasing one.
Hope you’re having a beautiful Sunday, sweetie.

PS – No worries about the typos! I didn’t even notice it – you know how the brain skips over many letters/words and yet manages to form a complete sentence and all that? Haha.

I’d love to try the Andalou Naturals Brightening All – in – One Beauty Balm (Sheer Tint) with SPF 30 and RMS Beauty Tinted “Un” Powder. I also adored the Kjaer Weis foundation, but discontinued its use because the coconut oil didn’t react well with my skin.

Hi there, for lighter skin tones, the Brightening BB Balm has been known to be too orangey…they have other BB creams from different lines you could look into though. So sad to hear the foundation broke you out! Damn. Which foundation are you using currently?

I’ve been using just concealer recently but I’m thinking of trying the foundations by Gressa Skin and Sappho Cosmetics next.
